    Driller:  This position is responsible for the correct assembly and makeup of the drill string and all of its components.  He must be attuned to the sound and cadence of a properly running rig to minimize unexpected and sudden machinery failures, and maintain the best operating procedures to avoid failures of the drill string or the rig components that handle the drill string.  A broad knowledge of good in-hole and tripping practices is a must. The Driller operates and monitors all drilling systems and equipment, supervises all drill crew work activities, and manages appropriate drilling documentation. This person must be highly motivated to work the crew in a manner to optimize the operational efficiency of the rig while working with the crew's safety as foremost in mind.  

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Supervise and ensure safety of drilling crew.
    • Ensure that new crew members are properly trained and familiarized with safety procedures and manuals.
    • Responsible for enforcement and clarification of Company policies and procedures.
    • Train drilling crew in safe performance of their duties and the proper care and maintenance of the rig and drill string.
    • Responsible for timely and accurate submission of various reports.
    • Responsible for adequate working knowledge of assigned station during BOP control.

    Derrickman
    :  The Derrickman is the crew member who handles the upper end of the drill stem as it is being hoisted out of or lowered into the hole.  He is also responsible for the conditioning of the drilling fluid and the circulating machinery. The primary responsibility while drilling is to maintain the circulating pumps in top operating condition.  In order to be able to do this job, he must be able to hear and sense when problems are arising and make repairs before any significant damage to the pumps can occur.  While tripping, the Derrickman's station is on the "monkey board" 60 ft to 90 ft above the drill floor.  This position is responsible for efficient tripping procedures and for the maintenance and operation of pipe handling equipment, including experience in stabbing and makeup of each joint while running casing.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Perform pump repairs -- (disassemble, reassemble).  Change oil and filters.
    • Trip pipe, work stabbing board and monkey board, must know the proper way to work tongs and pull slips and how to pick up and lay down drill pipe.
    • Work mud pits, check and mix weight properly, observe pit level and reports any change, mixes chemicals, lines up mixing pump manifold, and maintains good communication with mud engineer.
    • Work on BOP's (nipple up and nipple down), and inspect BOP's daily.
    • Maintain clean working environment.
    • Work on derrick, maintain derrick condition, grease crown and block, and has knowledge of well condition.
    • Observe safety regulations.  In addition, must be capable of quickly evacuating the facility to avoid injury during emergencies.
    • Assist with rig-up / rig-down of the drilling rig; with the repair and maintenance of large mud pumps, shale shaker, desander and desilter units; and is responsible for working on the monkey board.  Must latch and unlatch drill pipe elevators and pull or push drill pipe into drill pipe fingers.
    • Responsible for greasing crown and visually checking sheaves for wear.

    Floorhand:  Commonly referred to as a "Roughneck", the floorhand works under the direction of the Driller to maintain the pipe handling and make-up tools in good condition.  A Floorhand is a crew member whose primary work station is on the rig floor.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Trip pipe (consists of using slips, tongs and elevators), line up choke or kill manifold and make connections while drilling.
    • Nipple BOP's -- up and down.
    • Relieve Derrickhand in Derrick, assist in mixing drilling mud or lost circulation material and chemicals, and act as Flag Crane Operator or Driller when Operator cannot see loads.
    • Shaker duties:  Monitor mud weight, viscosity and sand weight while drilling.
    • Monitor hole fill-ups while pulling out of hole, lining up trip tanks, run air/hydraulic hoist (lowering and lifting), check for leaks on BOP stack, and measure pipe.
    • Mix sack chemicals, run casing, tag casing, and unhook cables from casing and drill pipes.
    • Assist with repairs and maintenance of large mud pumps, shale shaker, desander and desilter units.
    • Responsible for moving joints of casing to the catwalk during casing job.  Assist with attaching casing to pick-up lines so casing can be lifted to the rig floor.
    • Responsible for rolling drill pipe to or from catwalk, attaching or detaching the pick-up lines, and using drill pipe tongs, spinning chain, air spinners, slips, as well as handling drill pipe joints.

    Roustabout:  A Roustabout handles the equipment and supplies that are sent to the rig.  Also assists in general work around the rig.

     

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Unload equipment.
    • Relieve the roughneck on the floor, put pipe on catwalks (lay down pipe), grease the crane, assist the service hands in rigging up tools, and perform daily inspection of BOP equipment.
    • Load and unload supplies and equipment.
    • Fuel the rig, monitor hole fill-ups while pulling out of hole, lining up trip tank, measure pipe, and inspect and ensure all safety and riding belts to make sure they are in good condition.

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.


    Sitting, standing, walking, lifting materials, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing stairs, climbing using legs and arms, balancing, stooping, kneeling, repeated bends, crawling, reaching high and low, and repetitive twisting or pressure, involving wrist and hands.  Must be able to lift 50-75 pounds for a duration of at least 3 minutes. Hearing, seeing (including depth perception and peripheral vision), ability of rapid mental coordination simultaneously.  Must be able to tolerate continuous vibrations and elevated noise levels as well as tolerate wearing personal protective equipment, including, but not limited to, a hard hat, steel toed safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, safety glasses, goggles and full body harness.  Mentally alert for entire regular shift of 8 to 14 hours.
